The film capacitor is made of two plastic films covered with metal electrodes, wound into a cylindrical winding, connected to the terminals, and then packaged. In general, the film capacitor is not polarized, so the two terminals are interchangeable. There are two different types of plastic film capacitors, made from two different electrode configurations:
Film/foil capacitors or metal foil capacitors are made using two plastic films as dielectrics. Each uses a thin metal foil (usually aluminum foil) as an electrode. This type of construction has the advantage of easy electrical connection to the metal foil electrode and the ability to handle high current surges.
Metallized film capacitors are made of two layers of metallized film with a plastic film as the dielectric. Very thin (~ 0.03 μιη) vacuum deposited aluminum metallization was applied to one or both sides to serve as an electrode. Such a configuration may have self-healing properties, as dielectric breakdown or shorting between the electrodes does not necessarily result in damage to the assembly. With this basic design, it is possible to produce high-quality products, such as zero-defect capacitors, in smaller cases (high volume efficiency) compared to film/foil structures, and to produce wire-wound capacitors with larger capacitance values (up to 100 μF or more). However, one disadvantage of the metallized structure is its limited current surge rating.
