Internal structure for increasing the rated voltage

The rated voltage of different film materials depends on factors such as film thickness, material quality (free from physical defects and chemical impurities), ambient temperature, operating frequency, and the safety margin against breakdown voltage (dielectric strength). However, broadly speaking, the rated voltage of film capacitors primarily hinges on the thickness of the plastic film. For example, using the minimum available film thickness for polyester film capacitors—approximately 0.7 μm—it is possible to manufacture capacitors with a rated voltage of 400 VDC. If higher voltages are required, thicker plastic films are typically employed. Yet, the breakdown voltage of dielectric films generally exhibits a nonlinear relationship: for thicknesses greater than about 5 mils, the breakdown voltage increases only in proportion to the square root of the film thickness. On the other hand, capacitance decreases linearly with increasing film thickness. For reasons related to availability, storage, and existing processing capabilities, there is a strong desire to achieve higher breakdown voltages while continuing to use currently available film materials. This can be accomplished by metallizing only one side of the insulating film, thereby creating an internal series connection within the capacitor. By employing this series-connection technique, the overall breakdown voltage of the capacitor can be multiplied by an arbitrary factor; however, the total capacitance will also decrease by the same factor. The breakdown voltage can be enhanced either by using a unilaterally metallized film or by employing a bilaterally metallized film. Bilaterally metallized films can also be combined with partially metallized layers to form internally series-connected capacitors. These various design approaches are particularly well-suited for high-reliability applications involving polypropylene films.
